Tester statement on appointment of new Postmaster General

(U.S. Senate) – Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement after the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors announced Megan Brennan will replace Patrick Donahoe as Postmaster General in February 2015:

“I look forward to meeting Ms. Brennan and hearing her views on how to keep the Postal Service solvent while ensuring strong delivery standards in all parts of the country. Folks in Montana assure me that privatization would put an end to the Postal Service and devastate mail delivery in rural America. Working together, I know we can find ways to set the Postal Service on sound financial footing without gutting delivery services.”

In February this year, Tester voted against a postal reform bill because it hurt rural mail delivery and moved the USPS closer to privatization. Additional cuts to service standards in the new year will virtually eliminate overnight delivery in numerous parts of the country. Therefore, Senator Tester is currently working with his Senate colleagues to find a workable solution to reform the USPS.
