Tester, Daines Introduce Resolution Designating National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week

Highlighting importance of higher education in Indian Country

Today, U.S. Senators Jon Tester and Steve Daines led a bipartisan group of colleagues in designating the week beginning February 5th as “National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week” to highlight the importance of higher education in Indian Country.

“Montana is fortunate to be home to seven outstanding Tribal Colleges and Universities – the most of any state – and these schools play a critical role educating and shaping our next generation of leaders,” said Tester. “As a former public school teacher, I know that education is the great equalizer, and I’m proud to join educators, students and families across Big Sky Country in recognizing and celebrating National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week.”

“Montana’s tribal colleges help support young Montanans and equip students with the tools they need to succeed,” said Senator Daines. “This week, we’re glad to celebrate and recognize the great work of the students, teachers and staff at tribal colleges across the Treasure State.”

Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) offer Native American students access to knowledge and skills grounded in cultural traditions and values. Montana is home to seven Tribal Colleges and Universities, the most of any state. These institutions serve thousands of Native and hundreds of non-Native students every year. Across the country, there are 34 Tribal Colleges and Universities operating 90 campuses in 15 states.
