Tester’s latest bill honors military service

Bipartisan measure creates commemorative stamp honoring troops and veterans

(GREAT FALLS, Mont) – Senator Jon Tester is backing a bipartisan bill that creates a commemorative stamp to honor all Montanans and Americans who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

The Victory for Veterans Stamp Act authorizes a 25-cent stamp commemorating the service of active-duty service members and veterans.

Proceeds from the sale of each stamp would be used to support veterans programs, Postal Service operations and deficit reduction.

“These stamps are more than a symbol of support for our nation’s service members,” said Tester, Montana’s only member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee. “They give folks a chance to directly support our veterans by helping to prepare our troops for civilian life once they return home.”

Tester’s bill is modeled after World War II’s successful Victory Stamp drive that used stamps and bonds to assist in the war effort.

The stamps authorized by Tester’s bill could not be used as legal postage.

Tester is a founding member of the Senate Veterans Jobs Caucus, which aims to decrease the unemployment rate among veterans. His VOW to Hire Heroes Act, signed into law last year, improves training opportunities for veterans and provides tax incentives to companies that hire veterans.
