Tester response to closure of Smurfit-Stone mill

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement in response to today’s news of the planned shutdown of the Smurfit-Stone mill in Frenchtown:

“I’m troubled by this news because it’s a tough loss for our state—and for many folks whose livelihoods and families depend on Smurfit.  I will work to make sure the employees affected by this announcement can get the help and training they need so they can get back on their feet.”

Tester is the author of the Forest Jobs and Recreation Act, legislation designed to create jobs in the wood-products industry and to “keep the people and equipment needed for healthy forests.”

The Forest Jobs and Recreation Act will receive a Senate subcommittee hearing this Thursday, December 17.
