And the James Madison Award goes to… Senator Jon Tester

The American Library Association Washington Office is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2017 James Madison Award is Senator Jon Tester of Montana. The award will be presented by ALA Past President Sari Feldman in a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, March 15. Even if you can’t join us in Washington, you will be able to watch the program wherever you have an internet connection! This year the event will be streamed live from the Knight TV Studio in the Newseum at newseum.org/live.

The James Madison Award is presented annually near the anniversary of President Madison’s birth. The award honors individuals or groups who have championed, protected and promoted public access to government information and the public’s right to know.

This year’s award will be presented during Sunshine Week, the annual nationwide celebration of open access to public information and what it means for communities across the country, as part of an event sponsored by our partners: the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), the Newseum Institute, the American Society of News Editors and OpenTheGovernment.org. Following the award ceremony, a panel discussion on “Accessing Information in the Trump Administration” will offer practical advice for journalists, advocates and others who rely on access to government data for informing the public and holding the government accountable.
