Tester, Walsh Ask for New Crop Insurance Now

BOZEMAN – Montana’s Senators hope two new crop insurance initiatives will go into effect sooner rather than later to help barley and wheat farmers with their 2015 harvest.

Democratic Senators Jon Tester and John Walsh called on the Dept. of Agriculture to speed up the Crop Margin Coverage Pilot Program and the Malt Barley Endorsement, both part of the newly-implemented Farm Bill.

The USDA recently said the insurance offered through these two programs might not be available until 2016.

Tester says these initiatives need to be available in 2015 to help farmers make crop selections based on market conditions without having to worry too much about insurance coverage.
