ABC Fox Montana: Bipartisan bill giving taxpayer relief to wildfire victims introduced in U.S. Senate

by Posie Buffington

A bipartisan bill providing taxpayer relief for wildfire victims was introduced to the United States Senate Tuesday.

Currently, some qualified wildfire relief payments count towards gross taxable income which raises income taxes on taxpayers impacted by wildfires.

But the bill would exclude those relief payments and other compensation for wildfire damage from taxable income.

“…AS FIRE SEASONS BECOME LONGER AND MORE EXTREME, WE KNOW THAT WILDFIRES ARE BECOMING EVEN MORE COMMON IN THE TREASURE STATE EACH YEAR, WHICH IS WHY WE NEED TO ENSURE THAT THOSE AFFECTED RECEIVE THE RELIEF THEY DESERVE…” Sen. Jon Tester said in a release from his office.
