Tester Statement on Little Shell Recognition Bill

Senator: I am Relentlessly Fighting to Get this Legislation on the President’s Desk

(U.S. Senate)—U.S. Senator Jon Tester today issued the following statement after the House Natural Resources Committee passed a bill to federally recognize the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians:

“The Little Shell have waited far too long to gain access to the same resources as other tribes. We are another step toward righting this injustice, and I am relentlessly fighting to get the Little Shell Recognition bill on the President’s desk and signed into law.”

Tester first introduced legislation granting the Little Shell Tribe federal recognition in 2007, it was the first bill he ever introduced in Congress.

Tester passed his bipartisan bill to grant the Little Shell federal recognition out of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee in May of 2017.
