On Equal Pay Day, Tester Demands Congress Take up Paycheck Fairness Act
(U.S. Senate)-Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement recognizing Equal Pay Day, which signifies how far into the following year women must work to earn the same pay as their male counterparts did in the previous year:
"Paying women less than their male counterparts does not reflect our American values. Today I call on Congress to move the Paycheck Fairness Act forward because women in Montana, and across the nation, deserve equality in the workplace."
Tester is the only member of the Montana Congressional delegation sponsoring the Paycheck Fairness Act, which makes it illegal for employers to retaliate against workers who discuss their wages. The Paycheck Fairness Act will also make employers liable to civil action and require the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to collect pay information from employers.
In 2014, Republicans twice blocked the Senate from debating the Paycheck Fairness Act.
