Tester statement on EPA proposal

(U.S. SENATE) - Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement after the EPA announced its proposal to reduce U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants by 30 percent by 2030:

"Agriculture and outdoor recreation power Montana's economy. From floods to fires to beetle-killed trees, we know the consequences of the changing climate. State-based solutions that limit the effects of climate change will keep these industries and our economy strong. This responsible proposal gives states flexibility to balance the needs of today with the demands of tomorrow. I will make sure it works for Montanans."

The proposed rule, which will be available for public comment for 120 days, would cut carbon dioxide emissions from 2005 levels. Many states, including Montana, have already reduced carbon dioxide levels by switching energy sources and improving their energy efficiency.

According to the proposal, each state would have flexibility in choosing how to meet the emissions goal.

Agriculture is Montana's number one industry. Montana's outdoor economy contributes $6 billion every year to the state's overall economy and supports more than 60,000 jobs. Both of these industries benefit from cleaner air in Montana.
