On Equal Pay Day, Tester calls for women to be paid same as male coworkers

Senator sponsors Paycheck Fairness Act

(U.S. Senate) – Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement recognizing Equal Pay Day, symbolizing how far into the year women must work to earn the same as their male counterparts did in the previous year:

“It’s ridiculous that women have to work over 15 months to earn what their male coworkers make in a year. America was founded on the principle of fairness, and paying women less than men for the same work undermines that principle and what we stand for as a country.”

Tester today also sponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act that would make it illegal for employers to retaliate against a worker who asks about the wages of another employee.

The Senator’s bill would also make employers liable to civil action and require the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to collect pay information from employers.
