Tester’s new role in the minority: Swing vote that could help move key issues

HELENA – Montana’s senior U.S. senator, Democrat Jon Tester, will now be in the minority for the first time in his Senate career – but said this week his new role may actually create more opportunities to get things done.

In an interview, Tester said he could be among moderate Democrats who join Republicans to form a 60-senator majority to break a filibuster and advance certain bills.

“That’s a possibility,” he said. “I’m going to look at the policy and see how it works for Montana and the country. There are certain things that we may be able to support that others Democrats don’t. …

“I’m going to look at every issue, not because I’m a moderate, or from Montana, but rather how it impacts rural America and how it impacts America as a whole. … There will be a tendency for people who are more moderate to get things done.”
